Before you get started

What yous need to back up photos & videos

  • Good internet connection.
  • File sizes that tin exist backed upwardly.  Your files won't exist backed upwardly if they are:
    • Photos larger than 200 MB or 150 MP
    • Videos larger than 10 GB.
    • Items smaller than 256 x 256.
  • File types that can be backed up.
    • Photos: .jpg, .heic, .png, .webp, .gif, and some RAW files.
    • Live photos tin be backed up if yous use the Google Photos app on your iPhone or iPad.
    • Videos: .mpg, .mod, .mmv, .tod, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .divx, .mov, .m4v, .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m2t, .m2ts, .mts, and .mkv files.

If you try to back up a file blazon not listed here, it may not work with Google Photos.

Important: Your Google Account storage is shared beyond multiple products like Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail. If you have used all of your storage, you lot won't exist able to dorsum up new files.

There are ii ways to support your telephone, camera, or storage card from your calculator:

  1. Install Backup and Sync.
  2. Upload photos from your browser.

Gear up up Google Drive for desktop

  1. On your computer, download and install Google Drive for Desktop.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Select the folders or pictures you want to support and thenBack up to Google Photos.
  4. Select Done and thenSave.

Important:

  • If you remove a photo or video from your computer that you previously backed up to Google Photos, it stays in Google Photos.
  • If you remove a photograph or video from Google Photos, it isn't removed from Google Drive or your computer.
  • Uploads can exist slower and use more storage if yous support to both Google Photos and Google Drive. Unless you need a second re-create in Drive, we recommend you back up photos and videos to Google Photos.

If you already have Backup and Sync for Bulldoze

Fill-in and Sync is now Google Drive for desktop.

If you already have Fill-in and Sync installed, you'll be migrated to Google Drive for desktop.

To upgrade sooner, uninstall Backup and Sync and then follow the steps in a higher place to ready Google Drive for desktop.

Select a different upload size

You lot can change the upload size for photos and videos backed up to Google Photos from your computer.

Important: You can't modify the upload size for files synced with Google Drive.

Back up your Apple Photo Library (Mac simply)

If your computer runs macOS, you can back up your Organization Photo Library to Google Photos.

Tips:

  • If you have more than ane Apple tree Photos Library, only the Organisation Photograph Library volition be backed upwards. You tin use Apple Photos to modify the System Photograph Library.
  • If your Apple Photo Library is synced with iCloud, all photos and videos in your library and cloud will be backed up to Google Photos on macOS 10.fifteen and above.

Upload items to Google Photos from your browser

  1. On your figurer, open photos.google.com.
  2. At the top right, click Upload and thenComputer.
  3. Find and select your photos.
  4. Click Open.

You can too elevate photos from your computer to the anthology to upload them to Google Photos. If you drag a photo to a specific anthology, the photo will exist uploaded to that album.
